Bacteria & Aquarium Start

Starting up an aquarium relies on the gradual establishment of a biological balance. During this period, beneficial bacteria colonise the filter, the substrate, the decorations and the various surfaces of the tank. They take part in the nitrogen cycle by transforming the organic waste and toxic substances produced in the aquarium.

Bacterial products can support the filling of a new tank, sustain biological filtration after major maintenance or help recolonise the aquarium after a disturbance. Their composition and use vary from product to product: always follow the manufacturer's instructions and observe the storage conditions.

Adding bacteria does not guarantee that an aquarium can immediately house fish. The biological development must be monitored using tests, particularly for nitrite (NO₂), which is toxic to animals.

Introduce the inhabitants gradually and only once the analyses confirm that the aquarium is ready. Patience, regular testing and suitable filtration remain essential for a successful start-up.
